Interview with Brutal Kortex
1. If someone were discovering your creations for the first time, how would you introduce them to your artistic world?
I would say that my world is pop, colorful, refined, even childish... but this allows me to approach serious subjects with more lightness, while reaching a wide audience and encouraging them to think about important themes.
2. You explore deep themes like mental health and burnout. What inspired you to address these topics in your art?
It’s still hard for me to talk about it… These themes touch me deeply because they resonate with my own experience. We live in a time where societal unrest and expectations are omnipresent, and this has a significant impact on mental health. My art is a way to explore these tensions and better understand them, but more importantly, and this is new for me, to share this with others.
3. You feed a lot on pop culture. What fascinates you in this universe to approach such heavy subjects?
Pop culture is both a mirror of our society and an escape. It has this incredible ability to simplify complex concepts while capturing the collective imagination. It is full of contrasts, between an apparent lightness and the deep issues it reflects. It is an ideal universe to approach heavy themes, because it offers an accessible gateway for the public, while allowing to explore darker realities.
4. You use your art as a form of therapy. How does this creative process help you manage the tensions you explore?
Art allows me to observe and better understand my emotions and thoughts. By taking this time, I realize that they are shared by many, which helps me to accept them and especially to understand that I am not alone in experiencing this.
5. You seem to play with the balance between spontaneity and control. How does the creative process work for you? Is it instinctive or very thoughtful?
It's a mix of both. The beginning of the process is often very instinctive, I let my ideas and energy guide the first steps. Then there is a phase of reflection and precision where I structure and refine what I have created. It's like a dialogue between the unconscious and the conscious.
6. How do you choose the pop culture elements that you integrate into your works? Are they selected for their personal meaning or for their impact on the public?
There’s a bit of both. Some elements are very personal and reflect my own influences, while others are chosen for their ability to resonate with the public. Pop culture has this quality of being universal, and I like to play with that accessibility to address deeper themes in a subtle way.
7. Of all your works, which one are you most proud of and why?
I don't really feel pride, it's more a form of satisfaction in my achievements. And you can guess, there is no work that I prefer above the others :) Each one occupies a special place in me, with its own singularity.
8. Do you have any creative routines or habits that help you stay inspired and productive?
I don't have any specific routine, I work according to my feelings. I don't impose anything on myself, I decide according to my desires and my energy. Time is the most conducive breeding ground for creation, and the wealth that we carry within us is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
9. What do you hope people feel or understand when looking at your work?
I know from experience that we all have a different perception of what we observe. It depends on our personal journey, our construction. But if my works can provoke reflection, whether personal or collective, on the themes that I address, then I would be delighted.
10. What are your current or upcoming projects? Are there any new themes you would like to explore?
I don't have any particular projects for now. I continue my observations and reflections on this vast zoo in which we live, and from what I see, there is no shortage of subjects!
11. What made you want to collaborate with MoGA?
MoGA discovered my work on social networks, we exchanged, shared, and everything happened naturally, with a common desire to collaborate together.
12. And finally, what would you say to an artist to convince them to join the 12 adventure?
I would tell him: go for it :) It’s a great adventure with extraordinary artists.
